‘What a Beautiful View’: Early Recordings About Space Travel

without comments

benham_children_listening.jpegAt 11:29 a.m. EDT on July 8, 2011, the Space Shuttle Atlantis launched for the last time from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. I sat in awe of the live feed on the NASA website, witnessing the final Shuttle take off with people all over the world. thirty years after the first Shuttle launched, it is strange to think that we’ll no longer see these beautiful and familiar ships lift off and disappear into the sky. There’s a little Shuttle-shaped hole in my heart now.

Watching the launch reminded me that Folkways had some space-themed documentary recordings that I had never listened to. Moses Asch made more than folk music records — being an audiophile, what he really wanted to do was create a catalog of the world’s sound. Leaps in sound production quality during the space age made it possible to make scientifically useful recordings that also managed to capture the wonder of the time.

On October 4, 1957, Russian scientists, from somewhere in Russia, fired the rocket that put the first artificial satellite into an orbit going around the world once in about 96 minutes. Man’s first artificial satellite is called “Sputnik,” Russian for traveler.

Bus cuts ‘will hit most vulnerable’

HAMPSHIRE’S elderly and disabled residents face “social isolation” if controversial bus cuts get the go-ahead, it has been claimed.

More than 70 of Hampshire’s bus routes will either be reduced or withdrawn under plans to slash funding for unprofitable services by £2.2m.

the county’s rural, evening and Sunday services would be most hard-hit under the proposals, sparking fears that the most vulnerable will be cut off from society.

One bus company, Wilts & Dorset, says it will have to “look closely at its future” in the new Forest after admitting few of its routes will be sustainable without subsidies.

Dozens of routes through Eastleigh, Winchester, Fareham, Romsey and Gosport also face a shake-up or withdrawal altogether.

it comes as Hampshire County Council looks to cut the subsidy given to commercial bus operators as part of plans to save £55m this year.

A Government rural bus subsidy has also been reduced by £544,000 – equal to a 33 per cent cut.

Transport bosses have promised no communities with existing services will be left stranded with “taxi-share” schemes proposed for remote areas.

but Chris Perry, from Age Concern Hampshire, said any reduction in service would hit disadvantaged people.

without comments

Trust me I've tried them all….expedia, travelocity, orbitz, air gorrila, travel zoo, cheap tickets…etc…you name it…i've tried it…does anyone know of something different and actually cheap????my familiy is coming to san diego from detroit to see me graduate….need results pronto(June 13th is the date that they are coming…unitl June 27th) PLEASE HELP

Try flying there and then camping near San Diego. They could also share a nice but inexpensive rental house near by. Look it up on the web. Possible you could see if friends know of rooms that could be used at their friends houses. sometimes people are glad to help in such circumstances. I personally have slept in my van outside my friends houses or in their driveway to find a place to stay and then showered when I got a turn. Hope an idea pops up that helps.

Commentary: Lakers center Andrew Bynum lacking in judgment

without comments

His conscience is paralyzed. His sense of entitlement is blinding.

So, no, actually, I wasn’t surprised to see this week’s photos of Andrew Bynum leaving his convertible sitting across two handicapped parking spaces while he shopped at an upscale grocery store in Westchester.

If there’s one Laker who suffers from a disability of maturity, it’s him.

The sight of this strong, able-bodied basketball star exploiting a benefit belonging to the physically challenged would have been only sad, if it weren’t also so expected. the photos, unveiled in an NBC4 investigation, did not result in a ticket because there were no parking cops around. however, this was the latest in a string of incidents that have left the big man looking small.

A couple of months ago, Los Angeles Times columnist T.J. Simers wrote about an emailed photo from a reader who claimed the image was of Bynum’s sports car parked in a handicapped spot at a Playa del Rey bank.

A few weeks before that, Bynum ended the postseason with a disgraceful clothesline cheap shot of Dallas’ Jose Barea. Bynum was ejected from the game, but not before he tore off his shirt in a crude gesture of retribution, stalking away half-dressed while appearing half-crazy.

The Lakers had a meeting with him after that incident. they reportedly had another meeting with him earlier in the year about other questionable community behavior.
