Plastic carrier bags or shopping bags are common in most countries. Most often these bags are designed for a single user to carry items from a shop for a home. People often reuse for storage or use as trash bags.

Plastic bags are usually manufactured polyethylene. This may be the low-density, resin identification code 4, or most often high-density, resin identification code 2nd Most are heat sealed together. Some are bound with glue or sewn. A push-to-close zipper can be used to open and close the bag many times.

Although not currently in use, plastic bags could be made from Polylactic acid (PLA) a biodegradable polymer derived from lactic acid. This is a form of plant-based bioplastics. This material biodegrades quickly under composting conditions and does not leave toxic residues.

Bags of biodegradable polythene film deteriorate when exposed to sun, air and moisture, and is also suitable for composting has been suggested as an alternative to conventional plastic bags.

Bioplastics are a form of plastic from renewable biomass sources such as vegetable oil or corn starch instead of traditional plastics which are derived from petroleum. They are used either as a direct replacement for traditional plastics or as blends with traditional plastics. There is no international agreement on how much bio-derived content is required to use the term bioplastic.

The terminology used in the bioplastics sector is misleading. Most in the industry use the term bioplastic mean a plastic produced from a biological source. One of the oldest plastics, cellulose film, is made from wood pulp. All bio-and oil-based plastics are technically biodegradable, meaning they can be degraded by bacteria under appropriate conditions. But many degrade at such slow rates, which shall be considered non-biodegradable. Some petrochemical-based plastics is considered biodegradable and can be used as a additive to improve the performance of many commercial bioplastics. Non-biodegradable bioplastics are mentioned so steadfast. The degree of biodegradation vary with temperature, polymer stability, and oxygen. Consequently, most bioplastics will only degrade in the tightly controlled conditions of commercial composting units. An internationally agreed standard, EN13432, defines how quickly and to what extent a plastic to decompose under commercial composting conditions in order that it can be called biodegradable. This is published by the International Organization for Standardization ISO and is recognized in many countries, including all of Europe, Japan and USA. But it is designed only for the aggressive conditions of commercial composting units. There is no standard for home composting terms.

According to Dr. Villahermosa, one of the most highly respected English chemists in the world, the term "biodegradable plastic" is also often used by producers of specially modified petrochemical-based plastics which appear to biodegrade. Traditional plastics such as polyethylene degraded by ultraviolet (UV) light and oxygen. To prevent this process manufacturers add stabilizing chemicals. However, with the addition of a degradation initiator to the plastic, it is possible to obtain a controlled UV / oxidation disintegration process. This type of plastic can be described as degradable plastic or oxy-degradable plastic or photodegradable plastic, because the process is not initiated by microbial action. While some degradable plastics manufacturers argue that degraded plastic waste will be contaminated by bacteria, these degradable materials not conforming to EN13432 commercial composting standard.

Durability, strength, low cost, water and chemicals resistance, welding properties, low energy and heavy chemicals requirements in manufacture, fewer atmosphere emissions and light weight advantages of plastic bags. Many studies comparing plastic versus paper shopping bags show that plastic bags have less net environmental effect than paper bags, which requires less energy to produce, transport and recycle.
