You've made the decision to do some advertising in your area newspapers, but several newspapers. Realistically you can not run print ads in each paper, so you want to do the research, collect data, and finally speaking with a representative from the paper.

Where to begin, is always a stumbling block, but let it not stall your efforts to get your ad launched, and do what it's supposed to do, get new patients. The following suggestions should give you the confidence and tools you will need to complete the task and create a guideline for all your future advertising.

What is available and what paper do your patients to read?

Make a list of documents available in your area. You may or may not know every publication that is distributed, therefore go online and do a search for papers circulated in your zip code and maybe a few in surrounding areas. If you still do sure which ones to choose from, ask your patients what papers they read on a regular basis. As a newspaper begins to stand out in popularity, go ahead and make the call and find out who your ad rep is and request a media kit. Sometimes they can give you the information on the phone or via email. The ad rep maybe wish to make an agreement to meet with you, but hold off on that for awhile. You want to repeat this step several times, and if you meet with every rep, which takes much of your time. There will be plenty of time to meet when you decide which paper to advertise.

Their numbers will tell history

When you receive your media kits, you will have access to some very important figures. This information will narrow your search and selection. The first number you want to find the number of subscribers the paper. These will be divided into categories for the major newspapers Sunday subscribers, subscribers weekend and weekly subscribers, with Sunday probably have a larger number. To compare local rates for your selected papers.

Another number to note is the coverage of the newspaper. If your practice is located in a suburban area, you should know if the paper covers or have a department specifically for your area. This factor will become clear for several reasons covered later.

Large vs. Small Newspaper Newspaper

Larger papers may have large subscriber numbers, but … smaller newspapers, especially the local suburbs papers are usually free and is sent to all addresses within a specific area. Because there are no subscriptions as there are no figures to compare. You must not let it or the fact that it is a free paper that cloud your judgments. Here's why … small local newspapers will cover the local business, news, and sports teams. In small towns, they typically gather and support the local high school teams and parents and grandparents like to follow their children and grandkid's sporting events.

Competition quality, location and cost

Where is your competitive advertising? It is important because you do not want your ad to end up competing with your competitor on the same day, same week or same page.
Quality is important for obvious reasons, format and layout and over all look. Is it newsworthy feature articles and is the more than one or two pages. How many times it is published and mailed? Most likely, although it is once a week if the price is right, then your ROI may be greater with a small local newspaper. Larger newspapers typically charge more for advertising because they have a larger overhead. You may be good to negotiate a great rate or the paper may need more publicity so they can run some ad specials.

Geographical area is important because if we do not reach readers who are in your area so you are wasting your money. Most likely, unless you're offering a special service that no other offers, people will not want to travel outside their local and even if they do, just to take advantage of your offer, they probably will not be back for your results.
If your practice is located in a large urban area, you still may have a smaller area of paper available to you, like most large urban areas are divided into smaller subgroups cities. You can ask your patients if they receive a small free papers in their mail. If not free, ask if they subscribe to a smaller paper.

Myth: If it's free, it can not be good

Really? Probably not be so quick to judge. Advertisers pay for the "free" papers. And now you're maybe one of them. You and other businesses is helping to providing a good service for many who receive this paper. I would venture to say that your chiropractor commercials will give a better return in a local newspaper that is sent to you within your specific area. These readers would actually be the most likely to require an appointment.
