Laptop Power Plug

Your laptop goes dead and you do not understand why, because it is plugged in. The very first thing you should look for is the status LEDs. The transformer brick or AC usually has a status led it to show that it is plugged into a good business and works. If the laptop adapter LED is not lit, and the cord trapped in both the transformer and the wall outlet, so the AC adapter is probably bad. But most troubleshooting power problems take a little more effort. Fortunately, it also plain that the failure to be the power cord itself, as I have noted with some Toshiba models. Many HP and Compaq models use the "L" connectors, which are less prone to failure, and Sony and Dell cords seems more robust as well, but it is always a possibility. It seems to me that I have seen the "L" connector on IBM Thinkpad too.

If the status LED on the laptop blink when you twist the wire, or they may be, if you place the cord just right, the lack of either cord or the power connector inside the laptop. Of the two, you will the problem be the cord because it is much easier to do. A cord can see quite well (see above), but broken inside, usually caused by letting it dangle off the back of the laptop when you work on your lap. The length of cable runs from the AC power adapter (Dell Inspiron 8200 AC adapter) for laptop is shielded coaxial cable, with the inner head attached to the inner part of the barrel connector and the outer part, which serves as a justification. The actual power cord is often inextricably from the power supply and it is unlikely to fail as long as it remained.

Many power lines also have a large choke, probably a ferrite, which I assume is to prevent RF interference generated by the laptop from leaking back into the lead and turning length between the laptop and power adapter into an antenna. Honestly, I just cut them off at a repair if they are too close to the barrel connector. It is nice to have a reasonable wire stripper, so you can deprive coax in one shot instead of worrying about clothes with an inexpensive tool. You will take about an inch of the outer sheath off and then turn the shield braid together. Some techs like preload merge with solder before Tacking it to the power connector, but if there is a tab you can wrap it around first, it is not really necessary.

I prefer to buy new plugs than trying to reuse the original for several reasons. Firstly, the original AC Adapter the laptop will have a cast house at the plug, and the only way to get it out is to hack a little at a time with a razor. I've done that and made a repair, when I was traveling and had no choice, but the braided conductor on my Toshiba laptop was soldered directly to the outside of the barrel instead of having its own solder point, as a replacement connector. It is also very difficult to solder factory plug without melting insulator unless you have a warm, fine tip iron. I get my replacement Plugs into Radio Shack for a buck or so that the original for sizing. Inner and outer diameter must be an exact match, so you may even want to bring your laptop to shop with you.

If you work with cord still attached to the power supply (transformer), be sure to push the idea of the new connector into the cord, and facing the right way before you solder on the connector. Otherwise you will be faced with making the whole thing or just taping the heck out of the socket. The length of the barrel connector that fits into the notebook body is somewhat flexible, can work for long, short, and you may be able to back off a little connector shell. To the left you can see the inner (yellow) on the laptop wire soldered to the center tab of the barrel Conector and braid soldered to the outer tab. If you have a HEATSHRINK gun and hose, you can make a much nicer job of it than I do here

Of course, if you do not want the two tabs to touch or just shorts out so you can work a little tape around one of the tabs if you are paranoid, but leave room to get the idea. The skull is actually threaded, as is the plug, so they usually hold together very well. Since this did not give me so much grief the first time it happened, I always travel with an extra replacement end for my laptop's power cord. While my first replacement is still holding up, should it fail, can I just undo splice and tape replacement ends in a few minutes. It is unfortunate that so many people buy a new laptop power supply or even crack open their laptop and start fooling with the inside of the container when the problem is just the plug on the cord.
